What do you owe a client in an after-hours warranty emergency?

Short answer. Prompt help: talk them through stopping the water by phone, schedule a visit for the morning, document everything, and fix it under warranty if your work failed.

Work it through

You're the contractor. Pick what you'd do, then see how each choice plays out.

It's 11 PM on a Saturday. A client from three months ago calls in a panic — the bathroom plumbing from your renovation is leaking and flooding the first floor.

You completed the job, it passed inspection, and the warranty is active.

  1. Correct

Emergency response is part of being a professional contractor. You don't need to be on-site at 11 PM, but helping them stop the water damage by phone is the right first step. The leak is likely a warranty issue — a fitting failure or connection issue from your renovation. Schedule the morning visit, document everything, and fix it under warranty. This kind of responsiveness generates lifelong clients.

  2. Poor response

If your renovation plumbing is leaking three months later during your warranty period, that's YOUR responsibility. Telling a client with an active flood to call someone else is how you lose clients, generate complaints, and build a reputation as a contractor who disappears after final payment. At minimum, help them stop the water by phone. The plumbing you installed is failing — own it.
